Silent Knight

Free PDF manuals for Silent Knight fire alarm panels — the Honeywell-owned brand based in Maple Grove, Minnesota, primarily serving the North American fire alarm market. This library covers the full Silent Knight range: the IntelliKnight addressable platform (5600, 5700, 5808, 5820XL series) and the Silent Knight conventional panels (5207, 5208, 5808, 6808, 6820 series), plus the Emergency Voice System (EVS) integration manuals.

About Silent Knight

Silent Knight is a Honeywell-owned fire alarm brand with a strong installed base across the United States and Canada. The platform is NFPA 72 compliant and uses Honeywell’s SLC (Signaling Line Circuit) addressable protocol — closely related to the SLC technology used in Notifier panels (also Honeywell-owned). Key product families:

  • IntelliKnight Series — addressable fire alarm panels (5600, 5700, 5808, 5820XL) for medium and large commercial buildings
  • 5200 Series — compact conventional panels (5207, 5208) for small commercial sites
  • 5808 / 6808 — addressable panels for medium-sized commercial installations
  • 6820 Series — larger commercial addressable platform with extensive expansion options
  • EVS Range — Emergency Voice System integration for voice evacuation requirements

Silent Knight EVS variants

Many Silent Knight panel models are available in both standard and EVS variants. The EVS variant integrates an Emergency Voice System amplifier for voice evacuation announcements alongside the fire detection function — useful for high-occupancy buildings, multi-floor sites and any installation requiring intelligible voice messaging during a fire event.

Silent Knight in the UK and Ireland

Silent Knight panels are primarily sold in North America, but UK and Irish engineers occasionally encounter them on US-headquartered company sites or imported equipment. The fundamental fire alarm engineering principles — SLC loop addressing, cause-and-effect logic, walk test — translate directly between Silent Knight and other manufacturer platforms.

Fire alarm training

BH Courses do not currently run a dedicated Silent Knight programme, but the underlying SLC platform technology is shared with the Notifier Fire Alarm Training course (also a Honeywell-owned SLC platform). Engineers competent on Notifier will pick up Silent Knight quickly because the loop architecture and cause-and-effect concepts are the same.

For broader fire alarm engineering competence, the BH Courses Fire Alarm Training Course covers nine major panel platforms and provides the theoretical grounding needed for any addressable fire alarm system.

Silent Knight 6820 / 6820-EVS Installation Manual

The Silent Knight 6820 / 6820-EVS Installation Manual is the engineering reference for installing the Silent Knight 6820 addressable fire alarm panel and its EVS variant. The 6820 is the larger member of the 6800 series, designed for medium-to-large US commercial installations with extensive expansion options.

What the manual covers

  • Cabinet mounting, AC mains wiring, earthing
  • Battery sizing for the larger platform
  • SLC loop topology with multiple loops
  • Silent Knight addressable device wiring and addressing
  • NAC wiring with multiple notification circuits
  • EVS variant: voice evacuation amplifier integration
  • EVS variant: speaker circuit wiring and amplifier sizing
  • EVS variant: live announcement and pre-recorded message setup
  • Auxiliary I/O, relay and expansion module wiring
  • Front-panel and PC tool programming
  • Walk test and commissioning sign-off
  • NFPA 72 compliance notes for voice evacuation

Who should use this manual

This manual is for fire alarm commissioning engineers deploying Silent Knight 6820 or 6820-EVS panels. The EVS variant requires voice evacuation system competence and careful speaker circuit design for intelligibility compliance.

6820 vs 6808

The 6820 is the larger Silent Knight platform with more loops, more devices per loop, and richer cause-and-effect capability than the smaller 6808. Choose the platform based on installation size and expansion requirements.

Silent Knight EVS Emergency Voice System Installation Manual

The Silent Knight EVS Installation Manual covers the standalone Emergency Voice System product from Silent Knight — the voice evacuation amplifier and speaker circuit controller designed to integrate with Silent Knight fire detection panels for buildings requiring voice messaging during a fire event.

What the manual covers

  • EVS cabinet mounting and AC mains wiring
  • Battery sizing for voice evacuation duration
  • Audio amplifier integration and sizing
  • Speaker circuit wiring with supervised supervision
  • Pre-recorded message playback configuration
  • Microphone interface for live announcements
  • Cause-and-effect integration with Silent Knight fire detection panels
  • Multi-zone audio for floor-by-floor or area-specific evacuation messaging
  • Compliance with NFPA 72 voice evacuation requirements
  • Speech intelligibility (STIPA) considerations

Who should use this manual

This manual is for fire alarm and voice evacuation engineers integrating EVS with Silent Knight fire detection systems. Voice evacuation is a specialised discipline; the speaker circuit design directly affects whether evacuation messages will be intelligible during an actual emergency.

When EVS is required

NFPA 72 (and many local codes) require voice evacuation for high-occupancy buildings, multi-storey construction over a certain height, schools and healthcare facilities. The EVS provides the messaging function that simple sounder/horn notification cannot deliver.

For panels that integrate with the EVS, see the IntelliKnight 5820XL, 5820 and 6820 installation manuals (all available in EVS variants).
