How Stratos aspirating smoke detection works
Stratos systems use the same fundamental principles as VESDA and Wagner TITANUS: air is drawn through a network of sampling pipes routed through the protected area, with sampling holes pulling air from each protected zone. The detector analyses the air for smoke particles. Stratos uses a different optical detection method to VESDA, optimised for the medium-sensitivity range (Class C and Class B per EN 54-20) where the very-high-sensitivity Class A capability of VESDA may be over-specified.
Where Stratos is deployed
Stratos systems are widely deployed in installations that need EN 54-20 certified aspirating detection but where the highest-sensitivity Class A protection of VESDA is not required:

Stratos pipe network design
Stratos systems require pipe network design using the manufacturer’s software, similar to VESDA’s ASPIRE and Wagner’s equivalent tools. The design output is the engineering basis for EN 54-20 acceptance testing.
Stratos vs VESDA vs Wagner
The three leading aspirating brands serve different segments. VESDA is dominant in highest-sensitivity Class A applications (data centres, cleanrooms, museums). Wagner is dominant in Germanic Europe and in OxyReduct fire prevention. Stratos competes effectively in medium-sensitivity Class B and Class C applications where cost-effectiveness matters more than the absolute lowest detection threshold. UK engineers working across mixed installations will encounter all three brands.
Stratos training
BH Courses do not currently run a Stratos-specific training programme, but the underlying aspirating smoke detection principles are shared with VESDA and Wagner.
